Hip Young Parent in the Wall Street Journal

I am so excited to share that HYP Radio was featured in today's WSJ commentary on children's music!

Changing Tunes
Sick of inane children's music? There are alternatives.

BY JENNIFER GRAHAM
Wall Street Journal Online
Friday, December 8, 2006 12:01 a.m.

...Across the country, in Los Angeles, Amy Trulock streams children's music on her Web site, Hipyoungparent.com. Ms. Trulock, 31, gives Barney his due--"he gets kids to clean up their rooms, I would never put him down"--but says that she doesn't want her nieces to graduate from Sesame Street to Britney Spears.

"My two rules are 'No Barney, No Britney,' " Ms. Trulock said. "There's an overabundance of children's music, and not all of it's good. Because I don't have my own kids, I have the freedom of time, and I hope I can help by wading through it." The Hip Young Parent site offers lullabies at night and rock, jazz and other genres during the day (a recent presentation was the "Sixty Minute Science Singalong"), and welcomes music from independent artists. "Right now I'm looking for a good version of 'Wheels on the Bus,'" Ms. Trulock said.

Introducing HYP Radio:The Children's Music Alternative

Spinning records on my Geoffrey Giraffe turntable I fell in love with music, and vinyl, at the age of 3. While I do consider myself a music connoisseur, I have come to realize that I truly must have no taste, if I am as eclectic as they come. My ideal auditory experience could probably best be described as: Dr. Demento presents Glenn Miller conducting Dave Matthews Band backed by Dolly Parton and Johnny Rotten in a Hawaiian arrangement of "Do They Know It's Christmas"...the techno remix.

In the early nineties a brilliant new radio network was born in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. If Garrison Keillor and MTV had a love child, they would have named her Radio Aahs! Beaming a child-friendly collective of musical miscellany to every youth in America with an AM radio, it has now sadly become just another victim of the Pop Explosion and the Disney conglomerate.

When the notion struck me to try my hand at being a DJ in college, it was this format I hoped to not only emulate, but also improve. Convinced that there was more music than Barney and Britney to be shared between adults and children I began my stint, for two semesters, hosting the training station's first and only Alternative Children's College Radio Show. I turned to my most cherished possession of my youth, my crate of 45s, and let them mingle with the UCSB music vault. The rules were simple…keep it G-rated, use every genre, and ban the purple dinosaur and the pop princess. This was college radio, after all!

Thus was born KJUC’s “Unbirthday Party” and later revamped “Chipperadio.” Channeling Jim Henson and Sesame Street, each show had it’s own theme: numbers, animals, Christmas in July, and even a “very special episode” about bereavement after the loss of our Congressman and former professor, Walter Capps.

While my mother wished that I were still on-air, if only to produce weekly tapes for Grandma's Car, the logistics of graduation and entering the Real World put the brakes on my mission to bring cool kids and hip parents together through a combined love of song. That is...until now.

Please listen, share and discuss. Witticisms, inquiries and caveats are always wecome!

The HYP Advisory Anti-Bored

With the primary goal of Hip Young Parent to unleash creative, whimsical interaction between child and caregiver, I have enlisted those nearest and dearest to me in my mission. Both my guinea pigs and inspiration, together we will brainstorm and test the best in innovative multimedia, clothes and interactive play that is enjoyable for both generations.

J.D. (17)
Nearly an adult now, my pensive honorary little brother, J.D. gives the best relationship advice of any male I know. A cool computer geek and car afficianado, he's finally learning how to break out of his shell, as he prepares to leave the nest.

Julie (15)
I used to change Julie's diapers, and now she looks like Britney Spears. Thankfully, my boy-crazy honorary little sis is still refreshingly innocent. She is my favorite silly shopaholic and is equally a compassionate friend.

Lauren (7)
It was Lauren who first made me an Aunt, and she's been my personal Mini-Me ever since. Theatrical, imaginative and extremely well-rounded, she is in Girl Scouts, Soccer, Cheerleading and is already planning her music career.

Kaelynn (4)
My other neice Kaelynn is a wonderful combination of introspective thinker and social sprite. She loves animals and gymnastics, and looks forward to following in Lauren's footsteps in the Girl Scouts upon her graduation from Pre-K.

Aidan (2)
The youngest member of both my family and advisory, my nephew Aidan is already spouting an impressive vocabulary. Fascinated with planes, trains and automobiles, he is also a social butterfly in the making who will always greet you with a smile.

Am I a Hip Young Parent?

Godmother.
Honorary Big Sister.
A Young Auntie Mame.
Katherine Hepburn meets Mister Rogers.

Ever since I was old enough to babysit, I have helped raise some amazing kids with my whimiscal and empathetic view of childhood. In college, I hosted the only alternative children's radio show the training station has ever known, among also being a Health Educator during the week, and Sunday School teacher on weekends.

This blog, and the corresponding web site to launch 2005, HipYoungParent.com, is my attempt to filter this experience and passion into helpful and entertaining nuggets to assist today's cool parents (in all facets and definitions) in finding alternatives for the old stand-bys. While there may be some merit in Barney and the Disney Princesses, the world of children's literature, media, toys, clothing and decorating has much more to offer than the mass market.

In the months to follow I plan to focus on music, film and book review, unconventional decorating ideas, and new clothing for HYP babies, kids and parents. In the meantime...please feel fre to drop me a line with your favorite HYP tips and recommendations, and please check out the first of my HYP clothing designs in my shop, Pine Tree Tees.
